Scripture Union Daily Guide 19th January 2026 —Outline
Pashhur, upon hearing the prophesy of Jeremiah to the people, beat him and put him in the stocks overnight. The next day, Jeremiah gave Pashhur a new message from the Lord. Read Jeremiah 20:3-6 and note the details of this prophecy. Note the consequences of Pashhur’s maltreatment of the prophet (Jeremiah 20:4).
In Jeremiah 20:7-10, we see a combination of pain, grief and despair as Jeremiah laments the outcome of his obedient to God’s call on his life. He even considered the option of holding back God’s message. We observe here that discouragement or depression is not alien to even faithful servants of God (Jeremiah 20:14-18).
Compare with the experience of Job in (Job 3:3-6) and John the Baptist (Luke 7:18-23). Using the word of God (Jeremiah 20:11-13) the prophet encourages himself. This is a lesson to us that even through pains, mockery, ridicule and despair, we can still fulfil our calling and ministry (Hebrews 10:36-39).
A mood swing from praises to despair (Jeremiah 20:14-17), by the prophet here, shows the need to uphold all servants of God in prayers. Any Christian may experience afflictions, persecutions, hunger and discouragements. Let us note that spiritual exploits do not exonerate us from discouragements. However, we must guard our thoughts and not curse or despair, no matter the circumstances (James 3:9-12).
And So
Always pray for the servants of God that they will not be discouraged by adverse circumstances.
